new friends and new routines

Week 3 of living in NYC marks the beginning of a settling in of sorts for me. It's the beginning of me settling into a routine. Settling into my new life.

I completed my first week at my part time job, went out for the first time since moving here, and made some new friends.

Working at a bagel shop, while fast paced and a touch stressful during the morning rush, is fantastic and I considered myself smitten from day one. I get to drink coffee all shift and at the end of the day take home a bagel or two if I'm in the mood for a fresh bagel for breakfast the following day that I also don't need to pay for. And because the majority of the employees speak fluent Spanish, I'm hoping to pick up on at least a little bit, especially since my Spanish, while having studied it for almost 8 years, is embarrassing at best.

But my week consisted of so much more than just going to my new job and getting my assignments done.

Growing up on Long Island, I would come into the city often thanks to a combination of my mother's love for the fast pace and flashing lights and our own proximity to it. But traveling into the city with your parents is very different than living here and exploring it on your own.

Friday, after spending a productive morning and afternoon cleaning and doing homework, my roommate Bri, a friend of ours who goes to Fordham, her roommate, and I all went to Oktoberfest NYC down at Pier 15 where we sat at the water's edge and talked for hours while sipping on German beer.

Saturday morning called for a Friends marathon and a pot of coffee for Bri and I before we eventually wandered out into the bright, beautiful 85 degree day to check out the Chelsea Flea Market on 25th and 5th. It was there that we found some new pieces for our wardrobes and a little bit of much needed exercise and fresh air.

The Chelsea Flea Market is my new favorite place to pick up interesting pieces for my wardrobe,
cheap jewelry, and some new records to add to my collection.

Just some of the gems I found while at the flea market this past weekend!
Properly motivated, we decided to make our way down to Central Park for a stroll with some girls who were in Bri's masters program at NYU.

Not only was it a beautiful day for a walk, but the Global Citizens Festival was going on this weekend which meant that our walk included being serenaded by The Killers and The Lumineers.

Arguably the highlight of my weekend especially because they are two of my favorite groups and the tickets for the festival ran pretty expensive by the time I found out about it so originally I had been bummed about not being able to attend. But Saturday, I got close.

I can never resist a good book that also happens to be on sale!

I spent part of this week making a DIY letter board and considering I'm not especially crafty,
I'm very proud of how it turned out.

Like I said, I can never resist picking up a good book!

$2 daisies are my favorite and *cheap* way to cheer up my living room.

It's only been a week since I first discovered the Wattle Cafe, but I've already
become a regular and it's my new favorite spot to get all my work done.

Sundays are the time of new beginnings, the week starting fresh, and a relaxed and productive Sunday can really set the tone for the week ahead. Later tonight is student mass at NYU where a former chaplain from my undergrad will be giving mass, and I'm currently sipping on coffee in my favorite local coffee place where I've befriended the owner and the majority of the staff, so I would definitely say that a fantastic tone has been set for the week that lies ahead of me. And I cannot wait to see what the city has in store for me.

Cheers
Katie
