prague: a safe haven for dad jokes

*prahahaing our way through prague*

Prague, Czech Republic.

A wonderful place where I can make as many dad jokes as I damn well please and people can’t really get too mad about it since the name is pretty much asking for it. I mean, it’d be a crime to not say “Czech it out!!’ every chance I got. I would be doing everyone a serious disservice if I passed up the opportunities to toss out a solid dad joke at least 11 times a day. So obviously, I took full advantage of every chance I got.

Besides the countless opportunities for bad jokes, starting with the fact that we were staying at the Czech Inn where the wifi password was “iczechedinn” (LOL), Prague is a wonderful place full of delicious beer, beautiful buildings, and really good late night pizza.

We started off our first full day in Prague with a slow and lazy brunch complete with bottomless coffee and sesame rolls which we stuffed our purses full of to serve as a mid-afternoon snack. After finally deciding it was time to move, we headed out to Old Town Square where we were blown away by the stunning architecture and the beautifully detailed interior of one of the local churches (complete with a massive crystal chandelier and a children’s orchestra performing at the front).

After getting lost and taking the scenic route across the river in search of the John Lennon Wall, we finally stumbled upon it and took plenty of the mandatory super basic pictures and even wrote “Providence College ‘17” and signed our names around it in a relatively blank spot.

*Czech it out LOL*

We went right around the corner to get a drink and a light snack at the John Lennon Pub, and then walked towards home across the famous Charles Bridge as dusk rolled in.

Once on the other side of the river, we followed our noses to a small shop wafting the scent of chocolate and sugar out onto the street where we each got a trdelnik that we devoured within minutes. No idea how to pronounce it, but it’s a super delicious pastry coated with chocolate on the inside and all I do know is that it is freaking fantastic.

Later on, we attempted spending the night out at a local bar, but after a few mishaps and a lot of running (thank goodness I remembered to pack my deodorant and wear my comfy boots), we ended up leaving the smoke filled bar within 10 minutes in favor of a pizza place down the road; where I almost cried tears of joy because it was no longer Friday, which meant I could eat meat. After eating the world’s most delicious slice of Hawaiian pizza, we arrived at a club boasting good music and a cheap cover charge, but after such a long night, we hopped off the line in favor of salt and vinegar Pringles (which are apparently wicked delicious) and our beds (which were wildly comfortable for a hostel).

Day2 consisted of climbing to the tippy top of the Prague Castle, which boasted killer views of the entire city as well as killer pains in our calf muscles since it was a lovely 267 steps to the summit.

*smiling because we haven't climbed all the stairs yet*

*real excited to be here!*

After getting our breath taken away thanks to a combo of the view and the many stairs, we got lunch, warm wine, and prepared for night out numero dos. Sadly it didn’t go much better than night numero uno, but that’s okay because we more than made up for it on the very last night.

The morning of day 3, Christina and I went to mass at the stunning church down the road from our hostel, where we didn’t understand a word of what was said, but the beautiful Czech language was lovely to listen to anyways and we left mass in ridiculously high spirits.

We spent the rest of the day exploring, and then later that night we headed to a beer garden called Lokal to try some more Czech beers. My favorite one was one that kind of tasted like black iced coffee!

After drinking our fill, we headed down the street to the James Dean bar, where we spent a few more hours.

Jess and I eventually left since we had an early flight to catch, and after wandering around phoneless and lost for a while, we walked into a hotel where the doorman and his boss gave us snacks, let us use the bathroom and called us a cab. After finally getting home at 3:05am, we started giggling with the absurdity of it all since our alarms were set for 3:20am. After quickly showering and packing our belongings, we jumped onto the night tram to the airport under the light of a full moon.

We made our plane, curled into a ball and dosed in and out of sleep for the duration of the hour and a half flight, and then shuffled our way off the plane and through security and onto the tube all the way back to good old Mile End station; where we both dove into bed the second we arrived home and napped the day away.

Prague was a beautiful city, but it made my appreciation for London increase tenfold. Never will I ever take for granted the English language ever again. Plus, after so many instances in which we got lost, it made me appreciate the familiarity of home. And by “home” I mean London.

However, it is reading week which means no classes and lots more time for adventure, so I won’t be home for too long since we leave for Edinburgh, Scotland early tomorrow morning! But fingers crossed we won’t continue our “getting hopelessly lost in foreign countries” trend.

PS: I'm still Prahahaing about this:

Cheers

Katie
